Overview

Aquila Studio is a Rwandan independent game studio based in Kigali. Founded in 2021, the studio focuses on creating high-quality games built around innovative gameplay mechanics and story-driven narratives from Africa. The team describes its ambition as developing AA-quality titles while bringing African stories to a wider gaming audience.

Its main project is Eranko, a third-person nature adventure game centred on wildlife and conservation in Africa. Players can transform into animals from Africa's "Big Five" and explore their environments, with the game drawing inspiration from real events including poaching, conservation and conflicts in the region.

Aquila has described Eranko as both an entertainment experience and a tool for environmental education. The team has explored a model where each game download could contribute to tree planting, while part of the game's revenue would support conservation efforts.

The studio has also been involved in Rwanda's wider games ecosystem and has worked with local conservation and technology organisations around Eranko. Its team has included game developers, a concept artist, research and development staff and a UX technologist.
