Overview

Bawala Studios is a creative studio based in Accra, Ghana, working across animation and video game development. The studio brings together artists, designers, sound engineers and developers, and also works with startups, brands and individuals on creative projects.

The studio has developed games including Cowries Adventure, a casual game built around a young hero collecting cowries, an ancient African currency. The game uses hand-drawn artwork and African cultural motifs while exploring themes including perseverance, resourcefulness and community.

Bawala also works beyond games. The studio collaborated with Ghanaian creative Theo Bonney on Wee Kid Guys, an animated series focused on the challenges facing African creatives, including limited funding, infrastructure and access to markets.

The studio has also been involved in creative and cultural projects, including Art Peace, an animation project completed in December 2020 that encouraged peaceful participation in Ghana's elections.
