Overview

BlackRhino VR is a Nairobi-based extended reality company focused on developing immersive technology and experiences for the African market. Founded in 2015 by Brian Afande and Michael Ilako, the company was created with a focus on helping African youth become innovators in emerging XR technologies.

Its work spans virtual reality, augmented reality, 360-degree video, live streaming, holograms, VFX, animation and virtual world building. The company has worked with organisations including Safaricom, Meta, GIZ, UNICEF, BBC and Electric South.

Its portfolio includes VR projects for Henley Business School Africa and Meta, AR work for GIZ Rwanda and TradeMark Africa, and 360-degree productions for Safaricom and Women for Women. It also co-produced the VR film Le Lac, which won Best Digital Narrative at Sheffield Doc/Fest.
