Overview

Excursion Games is a Rwandan independent game studio based in Kigali, founded in 2022. The studio focuses on creating immersive games inspired by African folklore, combining game development with its own technology and tools.

The studio is developing Project Wayfarer, a role-playing game inspired by African folklore. The project is designed around a relatively open-ended progression and questing system, with the team aiming to create a large, immersive world rooted in African stories.

Excursion Games is also developing its own Wayfarer Engine, an in-house game engine built to support open-world experiences. The team has shown off systems covering graphics, physics, animation, AI, combat and world streaming, with the technology being developed alongside its game.

The studio has described the engine as a way to solve specific technical challenges while giving its developers more control over the technology behind their games. It has also indicated plans to eventually make parts of the engine available to others once its tools and editor are more mature.

The team currently lists Eddy C as technical director and project lead, alongside 3D artist Ish B, engineer Tony B and artist Chris T.
