Overview

Free Lives is an independent game studio based in Cape Town, founded by Evan Greenwood. The studio built its identity through game jams, treating rapid prototyping as both a creative discipline and a development philosophy, a practice it calls "game jam jitsu."

The studio is best known internationally for Broforce, a satirical action platformer that became one of the most recognised titles to come out of Africa, and Terra Nil, an ecological strategy game that earned nominations at BAFTA, The Game Awards, and the Game Developers Choice Awards.

Most of its catalogue has been published by Devolver Digital. Beyond its own titles, Free Lives co-founded Playtopia, described as Africa's first indie games and immersive arts festival, and runs the Jam Dole programme, which provides grants to local developers to build playable prototypes.
