Overview
South Game Studio is a South African game development studio founded in 2021 and focused on creating narrative-driven games and gaming intellectual property. The studio is co-owned by Avuzwa Ntshongwana, who is also identified as its founder, and has focused on developing games that explore diverse narratives and socially relevant themes.
The studio's work includes Sizwe Iqhawekazi LakwaZulu, an open-world PC game drawing on African culture and history. The project won first place at the Games for Change Africa design sprint and third place at the 2021 Fak'ugesi Game Hackathon.
South Game Studio has also developed Taoh, a game centred on the menstrual cycle and period poverty, reflecting the studio's interest in using games to address social issues.
The studio's development journey has included incubation at Tshimologong Digital Innovation Precinct after its success at Fak'ugesi. It has also been recognised through international creative and technology programmes, with Avuzwa participating in Xbox Game Camp Belgium in 2026.
