Maliyo Games rebrands GameUp Africa as GameUp Academy
The new platform will move away from the original five-month boot camp model
Nigerian developer Maliyo Games has rebranded its GameUp Africa talent initiative as GameUp Academy, expanding its focus from African developers to a global audience.
The change follows five years of running GameUp Africa. Maliyo Games founder Hugo Obi told PocketGamer.biz that the experience has helped the company better understand how people learn and the skills they need.
The new platform will move away from the original five-month boot camp model, allowing users to learn at their own pace while shorter facilitated programmes continue alongside it.
Going global
Obi said the rebrand reflects the company's belief that the training model is relevant beyond Africa, while retaining the GameUp Africa identity within the new Academy.
AI will also play a core role across Maliyo's creative and non-creative operations, with the studio incorporating it into its approach to training and development.
GameUp Academy is expected to launch by the end of September, initially opening to the 2026 cohort before being made available more broadly.
