Opeyemi Adeniran

Role: Founder, Eureka Studios

Location: Berlin, Germany

Background

Opeyemi Adeniran is a Nigerian game developer and software engineer based in Berlin, Germany. He grew up around Ojuelegba in Lagos and studied Computer Science at Yaba College of Technology. He started his technology career in Lagos around 2017 and later moved to Germany for work. He recently completed a master's degree in Data Science at the University of Essex.

Adeniran works as a senior frontend engineer and has a background in building software products. His experience with frontend development and product development also became the foundation for his move into game development. He posts his game development work online under the name Eureka.

His interest in making games goes back to his early experiences with programming. He has said that games were an entry point into coding, where he learned about game logic and graphics before moving into broader software development.

Danfo Run

Adeniran created Danfo Run as a spare-time project while living and working in Berlin. The browser game puts players behind the wheel of a Lagos danfo, with the first route taking players from Ojuelegba towards Yaba. Players pick up passengers, collect fares, avoid traffic and compete on a leaderboard.

The game took around four to five weeks to build. Adeniran worked on it at night alongside his full-time job, drawing on memories of Lagos and the places where he grew up. He has said that moving away from Nigeria and missing home helped inspire the project.

Adeniran initially expected only a few hundred people to play Danfo Run. Instead, it attracted more than 140,000 players in its first week and reached players in 145 countries. The response also led him to continue updating the game with new buses, characters, areas, missions and other features.

Current Focus

Adeniran is now focused on expanding Danfo Run while building Eureka Studios into a proper games studio. He plans to add more areas of Lagos, more characters and new ways for players to compete and play together.

He also wants to keep Danfo Run free. His planned business model includes brand partnerships that fit naturally into the game's world and optional cosmetics, while keeping the core game and competitive experience accessible to everyone.

Eureka Studios

Danfo Run is the first game from Eureka Studios. Adeniran has said the studio wants to make world-class games that happen to come from Nigeria, using local roads, humour, radio and everyday experiences as part of its games.

He has also said he wants to tell more Nigerian stories through games. While he has been developing alone so far, his plan is to grow beyond solo development and build a proper games studio.

Industry Position

Adeniran sees web games as a useful entry point for both players and developers. He believes a browser link removes barriers such as downloads, storage requirements and app store review processes, while also allowing developers to update games instantly.

He has also welcomed the recent growth of Lagos-focused games, saying there is room for different developers to tell different stories about the city. For Adeniran, Danfo Run's success is part of a larger opportunity for Nigerian developers to make games about places and experiences that local audiences already know.
